What is U3A?

The University of the Third Age is a movement that began in Toulouse France in 1972 dedicated to improving the quality of life for older people.

The term ‘Third Age’ was used in the context of the four ages of man – the first being childhood, the second adolescence, the third full maturity and the fourth age, senescence.

Third agers are active older people who, in general want to stay active in both body and mind.

U3A is a world – wide movement. The Sale group was formed in 1988, it is a learning group organized on a voluntary basis by active retired people in the third age of their lives.

By drawing on skills of its own members and the general public, it enables participants to take up new interests and extend existing ones. Enhancing their sense of self – worth and extending their range of acquaintances.

There is no age limit to membership.

All members are equal and participate according to their interests. Costs are kept as low as possible in the order of $30.00 per year incl. GST. This covers tuition costs for all sessions except specialised computer courses; these are heavily subsidised with grants received from ACFE. Tutors and administrators do not receive any payment.
